I like making things. In the last 15+ years, I’ve played a significant role in building and leading a movement to engage patients and consumers more fully in their health and healthcare through digital technology. Perhaps your doctor’s office or health plan has recently added a “patient portal”? Or maybe you track your activity through a Fitbit or another digital device? These are the kinds of things I work on. I recently spent several years building a program and establishing an office within the US Department of Health that integrates patients and consumers’ needs into digital health policy, including the $38 billion our country has spent on digitizing medical records. I faced strong opposition, both within and outside the government, but my persistence and success got me working closely with the White House, Surgeon General, and hundreds of industry leaders from organizations as diverse as the Mayo Clinic, Walgreens, Intel, and the American Heart Association. Today “patient engagement” is among the most popular phrases in digital health, though there is much room for improvement in implementing it well. When I’m not in the federal government (I also worked in the FCC) I’ve been advising companies of all sizes and speaking at national conferences. I’ve run my own financially successful consulting practice for about 7 years in aggregate, pre-and post my latest government stint. I’ve also been a Director in a technology-focused foundation, worked at an online learning startup in NY, written Harvard Business School case studies, and helped to rebuild and govern my family’s real estate business, which was in grave danger of bankruptcy following my father’s unexpected death in 2012. I’ve also earned a masters in technology in learning at Harvard, including designing my own courses though the MIT Media Lab.
